Nothing falls off a list.
A matter is a promise with a sequence behind it. Tasks carry the owner, the date and the step they belong to, so the next action is visible to the person who has to take it — and to the partner who promised the client a date.
Work that is visible, owned and dated
Tasks live on the matter
Every task belongs to a matter and, usually, to the step it advances. Nothing lives in a separate to-do list that only one person can see.
A board for the week ahead
See work in progress by owner, priority and due date. Drag something to a different day and everyone sees the same board, not five versions of it.
One owner, one date
Each task has a named fee-earner and a date. Reassignment is recorded, so a handover is a fact rather than a conversation in a corridor.
What partners notice
- The next action is never in someone’s head. Opening a matter shows what is outstanding, who has it and what it is waiting on.
- Cover is obvious. When a fee-earner is away, their open tasks are a list someone can pick up — including the dates that will not move.
- Junior work is checkable. Subtasks make the small steps explicit, so a supervisor reviews completed work rather than asking whether it happened.
- The file carries its own history. When a client asks what was done in March, the answer is on the matter with dates and names attached.
Boards and lists reflect the work recorded in the system. A firm that does not record tasks will not see them — the discipline is the firm’s, the visibility is ours.
A week in a litigation matter
Monday — the file opens
The matter starts from the firm’s procedure. Steps appear with their tasks, and the partner assigns owners in one pass.
Wednesday — work moves
A disclosure task is completed with a note. The board updates, and the dependent task becomes visible to the associate who has to act next.
Friday — cover is arranged
A fee-earner books leave. Their open tasks are reassigned to a colleague, carrying the dates that cannot move.
Month end — the record speaks
The matter history shows what was done, by whom, and when — the same record a supervisor or an insurer can read later.
